- made of steel measuring 41/2x13.5x13 (except for XR3 and RS coupes);
- made of light alloy, size 51/2x14 for XR3 and 6x15 for RS. Tires of size 145 SR13. 155 SR13,175/70 SR/HR13 (except for XR3 and RS coupes). 185/60 HR14 for XR3 and 190/50 HR15 for RS. Every 10,000 km, but at least once a year, it is necessary to check the value of the end runout of the wheels, the tightening torques of the rim mounting bolts.
The tires can be used up to the tread height at which it begins to lose its distinct relief. The pressure in the chambers of the front and rear wheels of Ford Escort vehicles should be 1.8 kgf/cm² when driving at medium speeds or 2.0 kgf/cm² for the front wheels and 2.3 kgf/cm² for the rear wheels when driving at high speeds and with a full transport weight. The pressure value should be checked on cold wheels before each long trip.
The air pressure in the spare tire is set equal to the air pressure in the rear tires.
ATTENTION: When balancing the front wheels on a vehicle, the wheel being balanced should be spun only by the engine and to a rotation speed corresponding to a driving speed of no more than 70 km/h. It is PROHIBITED to block or brake the opposite wheel during the balancing process.
Wheel replacement
NOTE: The spare tire is located in the luggage compartment on the left side, the jack and wrench are under the spare tire.
- Place the vehicle on a level and horizontal surface;
- remove the spare tire and check the pressure.
- apply the parking brake and engage reverse gear;
- insert the jack as deep as possible into the corresponding socket, give it a vertical position, installing the upper part as close as possible to the side of the car (Fig. 17);
- loosen the bolts securing the wheel to the hub;
- by turning the jack handle one turn clockwise and returning it to its original position, completely lift the wheel;
- check the reliability of the installation of the lower support of the jack on the ground;
- unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the wheel;
- install the spare wheel and screw in the mounting bolts until they stop, without tightening them completely. Lower the wheel to the ground and remove the jack.
Tighten the mounting bolts completely.
NOTE: The spare tire should be serviced and inflated to 1.8 (2.3 for high speed, GVW) pressure at the earliest opportunity.
