The service brake system has a diagonally split circuit. The hydraulic drive includes a vacuum brake booster and a rear brake pressure regulator. The front service brakes are disc brakes, the rear brakes are drum brakes. The parking brake has a mechanical drive to the rear wheel brake mechanisms. The Escort RS 1600 i brake system differs from other models in the location of the vacuum booster, drive levers and master cylinder pipelines.

Front wheel brakes


The front wheel brake mechanisms (Fig. 6 1) are disc, with floating calipers, single-piston.

On cars with 1.1 and 1.3 liter engines the discs are solid, with a volume of 1.6 liters the discs are ventilated. Brake mechanism brand Ate, type - FN 54.

Rear wheel brakes


The rear wheel brake mechanisms (Fig. 6.2) are drum-type, with automatic adjustment of the gap between the pads and drums.

Brand of brake mechanisms Girling. Nominal internal diameter of drums 180 mm. Wheel cylinder piston diameter 19.05 mm. Brand of linings Minex M 79/1. Width of pads 30 mm, thickness of front lining 4.35 mm, rear 2.80 mm, minimum permissible thickness 1.0 mm. On cars "Escort XR3i" and "Orion 1,6 injection" brake drums with internal diameter of 8 (203 mm) were installed, as well as reinforced brake shoes 38 mm wide with glued linings. The vacuum booster, brake calipers and ventilated front discs are the same as those on the Escort XR3. From February 1983 (production index "DK"), the Escort model cars, including the XR3i, were equipped with rear brake working cylinders with a piston diameter of 17.78 mm instead of 19.05 mm. The cargo-passenger version of the Escort continued to be equipped with working cylinders with a piston diameter of 22.2 mm. In addition, from this date onwards, the old type of automatic clearance adjustment lever was gradually replaced by a new one (Fig. 6.3).

If a wheel cylinder is replaced on one side, install the same one on the other side. Marking of rear wheel brake cylinders: "T" - diameter 22.2 mm; "L" - 19.05 mm, "H" - 17.78 mm.

Vacuum booster


Piston diameter 228 mm.

Master cylinder


The main cylinder has two pistons with a diameter of 22.0 mm, arranged in series. The piston stroke is 35.0 mm.

Pressure regulator


The pressure regulator regulates the pressure in the hydraulic drive of the rear wheel brakes regardless of the load. The regulator is not repairable and is replaced entirely in case of a malfunction. Since December 1982, a new pressure regulator with an outlet opening of 12.0 mm instead of 10.0 mm has been gradually installed on serially produced Escort cars. In case of installing a new regulator, fittings of the corresponding diameter must be installed.

Parking brake system


The mechanically driven parking brake system acts on the rear wheel brakes. The parking brake is adjusted by adjusting the free travel of the plungers, which should be within 1.0-2.5 mm. Since the end of 1982, a new parking brake cable consisting of one section has been installed on Escort and Orion vehicles. The new cable is interchangeable with the old one, which consists of two parts.
