1. The checks described in this Section must be carried out at least at the intervals specified in the specification and in addition whenever there is a suspicion of a fault in the brake system. The following signs indicate a possible malfunction of the brake system:
- a) The car pulls to the side when you press the brake pedal;
- b) When you press the brake pedal, squealing or scraping sounds occur;
- c) The brake pedal "falls" to the floor;
- d) Frequent topping up of brake fluid is required.
2. During the inspection, a complete inspection of the brake system must be carried out, including checking the thickness of the friction linings, as follows.
Front disc brakes
3. With the parking brake applied, jack up the front of the vehicle and secure it on supports.
4. For better access to the brake mechanisms, remove the wheels.
5. Through the inspection hole in the caliper, check the thickness of the friction linings of each of the pads.
Remember: The friction material is usually attached to a metal backing plate.
6. If it is difficult to determine the exact thickness of the brake pad linings, or if you are interested in the general condition of the pads, remove them from the calipers for further inspection (see Chapter 9).
7. Check the second brake caliper in the same way
8. If any of the brake pads are worn to or below the specification limit, all four pads should be replaced.
9. If possible, measure the thickness of the discs with a micrometer to find out if they can be used. If any of the discs are thinner than the specification minimum, replace them with new ones (see Chapter 9). In any case, check the general condition of the discs, paying attention to deep grooves and discoloration caused by overheating. If damage is found, remove the affected disc and regrind it or replace it with a new one (see Chapter 9).
10. Before installing the wheels, check all tubes and hoses of the brake system (see Chapter 9). In particular, check the flexible hoses in the area of the calipers, where they are subject to the greatest stress. Bend them between your fingers (but don't fold it in half) and make sure the rubber has no hidden cracks, grooves or cuts.
Rear drum brakes
11. After blocking the front wheels, lift the rear of the car and secure it on supports.
12. For better access, remove the rear wheels.
13. To check the thickness of the brake shoe linings without removing the brake drums, remove the rubber covers from the shields and, using a flashlight, inspect the linings of the leading brake shoes. Check the thickness of the friction material - it must not be less than the limit specified in the Specifications.
14. If it is difficult to determine the exact thickness of the brake shoe linings, or if you are interested in the condition of the pads, remove the rear brake drums (see Chapter 9).
15. If you have removed the drums, check that the return and pressure springs of the brake shoes are installed correctly and that there is no leakage of brake fluid through the working brake cylinders. Inspect the working surface of the brake drums for grooves and discoloration. If the surface is badly worn, the drum must be re-ground or replaced with a new one.
16. Before installing the wheels, check all tubes and hoses of the brake system (see Chapter 9). Once finished, apply the handbrake and make sure it locks the rear wheels. Remember that the handbrake also requires periodic adjustment; if his movement seems excessive, please contact Section 26.
