Examination


Check that full battery voltage is being supplied to the center terminal of the ignition coil.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the coil.

Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance of the ignition coil windings.

Remove the spark plug wires and use an ohmmeter to check that terminals 1 and 4 are connected to each other and to the coil winding. Terminals 2 and 3 should also be connected to each other and to the ignition coil. Switch the ohmmeter to the high resistance range and check the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 or 4 and 3. The resistance between them should be infinity.

If the measured resistance is not within specification, replace the ignition coil.

Removal


Remove the negative terminal from the battery.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil (see Fig. 5B.1).

Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil (see Fig. 5B.1).


Disconnect the high-voltage wires from the ignition coil (see Fig. 5B.2).

Disconnect the high-voltage wires from the ignition coil (see Fig. 5B.2).


Unscrew the screws and remove the ignition coil (see Fig. 5B.3, 5B.4).



Unscrew the screws and remove the ignition coil (see Fig. 5B.3, 5B.4).


Unscrew the screws and remove the ignition coil (see Fig. 5B.3, 5B.4).


Installation


Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
