Checking the charging system (Escort 5)

If the charging indicator lamp on the instrument cluster does not light after the ignition is turned on, check the connection of the electrical wires to the generator. Also check the serviceability of the indicator lamp. Check the integrity of the wire from the generator to the indicator lamp. If the indicator lamp and the wire connecting it are in good condition, then the generator must be repaired.

If the battery charge indicator lamp remains on after starting the engine, turn off the engine and check the condition and tension of the alternator drive belt. If the alternator drive is normal, repair the alternator.

If the voltage produced by the generator is outside the acceptable limits, check the voltage regulator.

Connect an accurate voltmeter to the battery terminals and start the engine.

Increase the engine speed and after the voltmeter readings have stabilized, check that they are within 13.5-14.6 V.

Turn on all electrical consumers (headlights, rear window heating, heater) and check the generator operation. The voltage produced by the generator should be within 13-14 volts.

If the generator voltage is not normal, this may be due to worn brushes or weak brush springs, a faulty voltage regulator, a broken diode in the winding, or wear of the generator rings.
