Removal
1. Set the wheels to move straight ahead.
2. Raise the front of the vehicle and place it on stands.
3. In the engine compartment, unscrew the tightening bolt of the connecting flange of the steering shaft with the drive pinion.
4. Remove the cotter pins securing the ball joint nuts (2) of the steering rod ends, unscrew the nuts and, using a puller (1), remove the steering rod end from the steering knuckle (3).
5. Unscrew the steering gear mounting bolts.
6. Disconnect the steering gear from the steering shaft by lowering it down and then removing it completely from the front wing of the car.
Disassembly
1. Remove the tips from the steering gear.
2. Unscrew the steering tips from the steering rods, accurately counting the number of turns of the steering tips.
3. Remove the clamps from both sides of the protective cover and pull the cover off the rack and steering rod.
4. Remove grease from the steering gear by moving the rack from one extreme position to the other.
5. Using a drill with a diameter of 4.9 mm, drill out the pins (1) securing the ball joints to a depth of no more than 9.5 mm.
6. Unscrew the hinge housings, retaining rings and remove them with the steering rods and ball joint bearings.
7. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the rack stop cover, washers, gasket, spring and stop.
8. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the drive gear bearing cover, gasket and sealing ring.
9. Remove the drive gear together with the bearing.
10. Remove the rack from the steering gear housing.
11. When replacing the drive gear bearings, it is important to remember that the upper bearing can only be replaced together with the gear, while the lower needle bearing can be replaced separately.
Assembly
1. Thoroughly clean and check the condition of all steering gear parts.
2. Install the rack into the housing in the central position.
3. Install the drive gear so that the cut (arrow) at the end of the gear shaft is perpendicular to the rack axis and is on the right side.
4. Screw on the cover with a new gasket and install a new sealing ring.
5. Install the rack stop and, using a dial indicator, determine the required thickness of the washers together with the gasket.
6. Place the indicator base on the rack stop and the indicator measuring tip on the support surface of the stop cover. Move the rack from stop to stop, determine the maximum deviation of the indicator arrow.
7. Assemble a set of adjusting washers, the thickness of which, together with the gasket, should exceed the indicator readings by 0.05–0.125 mm.
8. Install the spring, pre-prepared set of washers, gasket and stop cover.
9. Check the drive gear torque by using a dynamometer to rotate the gear at approximately 4 rpm. The torque should be between 6 and 13 Nm.
10. Install the inner ball joint of the steering rod on one side, having previously lubricated the ball joint bearing. Screw on the joint housing and the retaining ring.
11. Adjust the pivot moment by gradually screwing the pivot housing in until the force required to move the rod from the midpoint is 2.3 kg. To measure the force of movement, attach a spring scale to the threaded end of the rod at a distance of 6 mm from the end.
12. Tighten the hinge locking ring without changing the position of the hinge housing and connect them with a pin, having first drilled a new hole with a diameter of 4 mm. Be sure to caulk the pin.
13. Install the protective cover and secure with clamps.
14. Fill the steering gear with grease.
15. Install the steering rod on the other side of the mechanism, following the steps similar to those described earlier.
16. Check the torque of the rack drive gear and readjust if necessary.
Installation
1. Set the steering rack to mid-stroke.
2. Check that the wheels and steering wheel are in the straight ahead position.
3. Insert the steering gear from underneath the vehicle and connect it to the steering shaft.
4. Secure the steering gear with bolts and prevent the bolts from loosening.
5. Connect the steering tips to the steering knuckles, screw on the nuts and secure with new cotter pins.
6. Tighten the steering shaft flange clamp bolt.
7. Lower the car.
