Steering column

Upper part of the steering column

Removal
1. Remove the ground wire from the battery.
2. Set the wheels to move straight ahead.
3. In the engine compartment, unscrew the tightening bolt of the connecting flange of the steering shaft with the drive pinion.
4. Remove the steering wheel.
5. Unscrew the screws and remove the upper and lower trim covers.
6. If equipped, remove the lower sound deadening panel from the instrument panel.
7. Unscrew the hood release lever mounting bolt and move the lever to the side.
8. Unscrew the multifunction switches from the steering column.
9. Remove the electrical connector from the ignition switch.
10. Remove the upper steering column mounting clamp.
11. Remove the lower steering column mounting clamp.
12. Remove the steering column.
13. Remove the ring at the top of the column and remove the steering shaft from the bottom of the column. Before removing the shaft, make sure that the steering column lock is unlocked. The lower bearing with a conical spring will come out along with the shaft being removed.
14. To replace the upper shaft bearing, remove the steering column lock by drilling out the mounting bolt with a shear head.
Installation
1. Install the new bearing into the lock housing socket.
2. Install the lock on the steering column and screw in a new mounting bolt, tightening it until the head shears off.
3. Install the spring so that its side with the larger diameter is on the lower bearing pad of the deformable element.
4. Install the lower bearing so that its beveled edge aligns with the recess in the seat.
5. Carefully insert the steering shaft into the column from below and install the upper bearing retaining ring.
6. Install the turn signal switch control cam with the protrusion facing up.
7. Place the steering wheel on the shaft and ensure that the cam protrusion fits into the steering wheel groove.
8. Install the steering wheel on the shaft and secure with a nut.
9. Install the steering column on the vehicle, with the lower end of the shaft engaging the drive pinion axle, and screw on the mounting clamps.
10. Install the electrical connector onto the ignition switch.
11. Install the switches, hood release lever and upper and lower trim covers.
12. Install the lower sound deadening panel on the instrument panel.
13. In the engine compartment, tighten the tie bolt of the connecting flange of the steering shaft with the drive pinion.
14. Connect the ground wire to the battery.
