The cooling system is liquid, with forced circulation of liquid, with an expansion tank, semi-closed type for engines of the GLA, GMA and GPA models and closed type for engines of other models (pic. 2.63).

The coolant pump is centrifugal type. The engine pump of the GLA model is collapsible, has sealing glands. The gap between the impeller and the pump housing is 0.80 mm. protrusion of the pump shaft beyond the drive flange 1.5 mm. The pump drive is a belt drive for auxiliary units. On other engine models, the water pump is driven by a timing belt. From April 1983 to cars «Escort» a new two-piece toothed belt cover and a new coolant pump are installed. and the pump of the previous model is not supplied as spare parts.

If you are replacing the water pump on a vehicle with an old timing belt cover, you will need to purchase a new pump kit consisting of the pump, gasket, new timing belt cover, and new lower radiator hose. On vehicles with a two-piece toothed belt cover, it is sufficient to replace the pump and gasket. Electric fan 4 has a plastic four-bladed impeller mounted on the motor shaft, which is turned on and off by a temperature sensor installed in the upper radiator pipe for GMA and GPA engines (in the thermostat housing on engines of other models). The thermostat with a solid filler is installed in the housing near the ignition distributor (on GLA engines at the front of the cylinder head). Brand and designation of the engine thermostat GLA Calorstat Vemet V 28-V-5447. the beginning of the main valve opening is 65-89°С, the full opening is 99-102°С, the full stroke of the main valve is 7.5 mm. For used thermostats, the valve opening temperatures are extended by±3°C.
