Removing and installing the thermostat (Escort 3)

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery and drain the coolant. Disconnect the hoses from the thermostat, unscrew the three mounting bolts and remove the thermostat. Remove the retaining ring 10 (fig. 2.66) and thermostat 14.

Check the operation of the thermostat. To do this, immerse the thermostat in a vessel with water so that it does not touch the walls of the vessel. Heat the water and use a thermometer to determine the temperature at which the valve begins to open. Before installing the thermostat, clean the mating surfaces from the old gasket. Install a new gasket 2 (Fig. 2.69), thermostat 3 in the housing and secure with retaining ring 4.

Install the housing with the thermostat assembly with a new gasket 10 (Fig. 2.66) on the engine. Connect the hoses, fill the system with coolant. Start the engine and check for fluid leaks.
