Parking brake adjustment (Transit 2)

1. Generally, self-adjusting rear brakes will compensate for excessive parking brake lever travel, however, if the parking brake cable is stretched, it must be adjusted as follows.

2. After blocking the front wheels, jack up the rear of the vehicle and support it with suitable supports.

3. With the parking brake lever fully released and working under the vehicle, loosen the cable adjusting locknuts. One lock nut has a left-hand thread. Rotate the adjuster to remove all tension from the linkage rods and cable, then thoroughly clean and lubricate the adjuster threads (see Figure 14.3.). Press the brake pedal several times to ensure the rear brakes are adjusted, then pull the parking brake lever three notches.



4. Tighten the regulator (so far no more than by hand), tighten the adjuster locknuts, the threads on both sides of the adjuster should be of equal length and visible through the adjuster holes.

5. For normal subsequent operation, the parking brake should work with three to five teeth engaged. Release the parking brake completely and make sure the rear wheels turn freely, then reapply the parking brake and lower the vehicle to the ground.
