2. Remove the rubber plug from the front of the camshaft timing pulley. Turn the camshaft clockwise using a wrench on the timing pulley bolt until the first two valves listed in the table below are fully open. In this position, check the clearance of the first two valves listed.

3. The clearances for the intake and exhaust valves are different (see "Specifications"). Use a set of clearance gauges of the appropriate thickness to check each clearance between the end of the valve stem and the rocker arm (see Figure 9.3). The feeler gauge must have a tight fit (not free, but not motionless either) between the valve and the drive lever. Where adjustment is required, turn the adjusting bolt with a spanner to set the clearance to specification. The adjusting bolts are threaded so that lock nuts are not required.
4. If the clearance for the first pair of valves is correct, turn the crankshaft clockwise again to fully open the next pair of valves. Check it out (adjust if necessary) the second pair of valves and repeat this procedure with all pairs of valves.
5. Upon completion of the inspection (adjustments) install the rubber plug into the crankshaft pulley, then install the cylinder head cover as described in section 5.
