Note: You will need locating pins to perform this operation (or two rods) corresponding diameters. Chapter 4, Section 8 provides the required dimensions and additional information.
1. Top dead center (TDC) is the highest point in the cylinder that each piston reaches when the crankshaft rotates. Each piston reaches its TDC position at the end of the compression stroke and then again at the end of the exhaust stroke. For the purpose of synchronizing engine operation, top dead center (TDC) is considered to be the position of piston No. 1 at the end of its compression stroke. In the engines described in this manual, piston #1 is located near the timing belt.
2. Remove the timing belt cover as described in section 6.
3. Remove the large rubber plug from the front of the crankshaft groove pulley.
4. Remove the plastic plug from the crankshaft locating pin insert hole at the rear of the engine just above the starter. On Lucas EPIK turbocharged engines, the crankshaft position and speed sensor is located above the crankshaft pin insert hole. Disconnect the multi-pin wiring plug, unscrew the retaining bolt and remove the sensor, remove the gasket behind the sensor, if present.
5. Using a wrench on the crankshaft groove pulley bolt, turn the engine shaft until the U-shaped notch on the fuel pump toothed pulley is in the upper position.
6. After inserting the crankshaft locating pin into this hole, press it lightly and slowly turn the engine shaft first one way and then the other until the pin fits tightly into the hole drilled in the flywheel (see figure 4.6).
Figure 4.6. Crankshaft locating pin (A) passing through the hole in the cylinder block and secured in the hole in the flywheel.
7. Insert the fuel pump mounting pin through the U-shaped notch into the hole behind it (see Figure 4.7).
Figure 4.7. Mounting pins of the toothed pulleys of the fuel pump (A) and camshaft (B), secured in the corresponding holes.
8. Use the dowel pin to secure the camshaft timing pulley by inserting the dowel pin through the hole in the pulley and into the hole drilled behind it.
9. Now the crankshaft, camshaft and fuel pump are "fixed" in a position where piston No. 1 is at TDC
10. If the engine must be left in this condition for a long time, it is a good idea to leave a warning note inside the car and in the engine compartment. This will reduce the possibility of accidentally starting the starter, which could cause damage to the set pins.
