- a) compression test and leak test;
- b) cylinder head cover - removal and installation;
- c) valve thermal clearances - checking and adjustment;
- d) Timing belt of the camshaft drive - removal and installation;
- d) rocker arm shaft assembly - removal and installation;
- e) cylinder head - removal and installation;
- g) cylinder-piston group cleaning from carbon deposits;
- c) crankshaft seals - replace worn ones with new ones;
- i) oil filter - replace with a new one;
- k) oil pump - removal and installation;
- l) Oil pan - removal and installation;
- m) connecting rod and piston group - removal and installation;
- n) flywheel - removal, inspection and installation;
- o) engine mounts - checking, removal and installation.
Before performing any type of work, the engine compartment and the outside of the engine must be cleaned with any degreasing agent. This will make the job easier and prevent dirt from getting inside the engine (it is especially important to prevent dirt from getting into the fuel injection system). Depending on the scope of the job, it may be helpful to remove the hood to improve access to the engine when performing repairs (see Chapter 11). Close the wings to avoid damaging the paint (there are special covers made for these purposes, but an old bedspread will also work). If leaks are detected in the intake, exhaust, oil or cooling system and a part replacement is required (gaskets or seals), then this repair can be carried out without removing the engine from the car. Intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, oil pan, crankshaft seals and cylinder head gasket are easily accessible without removing the engine. External components and parts such as the intake and exhaust manifolds, oil pan, oil pump, water pump, starter, alternator, and fuel system components can also be removed for repair without removing the engine from the vehicle. Since the cylinder head can be removed without removing the engine, valve service can also be performed without removing the engine from the vehicle. In extreme cases caused by a lack of necessary equipment, repair or replacement of piston rings, pistons, connecting rods and big-end bearings is also possible without removing the engine from the vehicle. However, this is not recommended because the parts need to be cleaned and prepared for repair and a lot of preliminary dismantling work is required. Therefore, these operations are described in part B of this chapter.
