How to use this chapter
This part of Chapter 2 is devoted to possible repairs of the engine without dismantling it, and includes only those technical conditions that apply to this repair. Since this repair procedure is based on the assumption that the engine is installed in the vehicle, if the engine has been removed from the vehicle and mounted on a stand, some of the preliminary disassembly steps may not be applicable.
Information regarding the removal and installation of the engine with (without) the gearbox and its major repair is provided in part B of this chapter. You will also find there Specifications, related to repairs of this kind.
Engine Description
Engine - four-cylinder in-line water-cooled diesel engine with overhead valves and direct fuel injection (see figure 1.3). It is located longitudinally at the front of the car and, together with the gearbox, forms a combined power unit. The crankshaft rotates on five main bearings of the housing type. The big end bearings are also split housing type bearings and are connected to the pistons by floating piston pins. Each piston is equipped with two compression rings and one oil scraper ring. The camshaft rotates on bearings inside the cylinder block, is belt-driven from the crankshaft and controls the valves via tappets and drive levers. Each valve is closed by a separate spring and moves along a guide in the cylinder head. The oil pump is mounted at the front of the engine. The pump includes a sequential oil filter and is also belt driven from the crankshaft. In later engine models, the fuel pump is driven from the camshaft via an eccentric cam.
