Handbrake adjustment

Checking the correct adjustment of the hand brake is carried out by measuring the stroke in the plungers of the hand brake regulator. The plungers are located on the inside of each rear drum brake shield. The total travel of the two combined plungers must be between 0.5 and 2.0 mm (see fig. 1.31, 1.32).

If the stroke of the plungers is outside the specified limits, it is necessary to make an adjustment.

When making adjustments, a new lock pin must be used.

To adjust the handbrake, first fully release the handbrake, then depress the foot brake pedal several times to set the automatic adjustments. Remove the lock pin from the adjuster bushing then turn the bushing to set the total plunger travel between 0.5-2.0mm. Turn the blocking nut by hand until it contacts the adjustment sleeve. Hold the locknut with a wrench, and turn the adjusting sleeve to tighten.

Lock the adjustment by inserting a new lock pin.

Remove the plug from the rear brake mounting plate, at the bottom of the rear of the brake caliper.

With the handbrake released, insert a screwdriver through the plug hole, and insert the end of the screwdriver into the teeth of the governor wheel. Move the screwdriver up and down to turn the adjuster wheel as needed until the screwdriver engages the teeth.

Unscrew the governor wheel until it is completely free.

Repeat these procedures on the other brake assembly, then check the operation of the hand brake.
