Power steering pump (Escort 5)

Removal

Remove the negative terminal from the battery.

Unscrew 2 bolts and remove the power steering pump drive belt protective cover (see Fig. 10.55).



Raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on stands. Unscrew the screws and remove the lower protective cover of the power steering pump drive belt. Loosen the drive belt tension by turning the tension adjustment bolt clockwise. Remove the drive belt from the power steering pump pulley. Place a suitable container under the pump. Unscrew the hoses from the pump. Drain the fluid from the power steering into a container. Close the ends of the hoses with plugs (see Fig. 10.56).




Insert a 9mm Allen key into the pump shaft to prevent it from turning and remove the 3 pump pulley mounting bolts. Remove the pulley from the pump.



Unscrew the 4 mounting bolts and remove the pump from the vehicle (see Fig. 10.57).

Installation

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the pump mounting bolts to the required torque. Remove the plugs from the pipes and secure the pipes to the pump. Install the drive belt. Fill the hydraulic booster system with fluid and check the system for leaks.
