Engine — test run after major overhaul (Transit 2)

1. After installing the engine in the vehicle, recheck the engine oil and coolant levels.

2. Make a final check that everything is connected and that there are no rags or tools left in the engine compartment.

3. With the solenoid valve disconnected or, on later turbocharged engines, with the feed pump multi-plug disconnected, crank the engine with the starter until the low oil pressure indicator goes out. Reconnect the Lucas EPIC system valve or plug.

4. Contact section 4 and remove air from the fuel system. The engine will start during bleeding.

5. While the engine is idling, carefully check for any oil, fuel or coolant leaks. Don't worry if there's a strong odor or smoke from the evaporating oil.

6. Let the engine idle until hot water flows through the upper radiator hose. Make sure the engine is running smoothly and at normal speed, then turn it off.

7. After a few minutes, recheck the oil and coolant levels and top up as needed (see Chapter 1).

8. If new pistons, rings, or crankshaft bearings have been installed, the engine should be run in the break-in mode for the first 500 miles (800 km). Do not fully depress the accelerator pedal or otherwise overload the engine or any of its systems during this period. After this period, it is recommended to change the oil and oil filter.
