Engine Description
The liquid-cooled, overhead-valve, in-line four-cylinder engine is designated CVH or PTE. The PTE engine was introduced in 1995 and, apart from modifications to the cylinder head, camshaft, and air intake system, is virtually identical to the CVH engine it replaces.
The engine is mounted transversely at the front of the car together with the gearbox.
The crankshaft rests on five main bearings. The lower head of the connecting rod is mounted on connecting rod bearings, and the upper one is connected to the pistons by piston pins with a fixed fit. Each piston has two compression rings and one oil scraper ring.
The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy in which the camshaft is located, supported by five bearings. The camshaft is driven by a rubber toothed belt, which is driven by a pulley on the front end of the crankshaft. The toothed belt also drives the water pump, which is mounted below the cylinder head. The valves are actuated by levers and hydraulic tappets. A rotary oil pump is mounted on the front cover of the crankshaft.

Repairs that do not require engine removal
The following operations can be performed on the engine installed in the vehicle:
- compression test
- removing and installing the cylinder head cover
- removal and installation, and adjustment of the timing belt tension
- replacing the camshaft sealing ring
- removing and installing the camshaft
- removing and installing the cylinder head
- cleaning the cylinder head and pistons
- removing and installing the crankshaft pulley
- replacement of crankshaft oil seal rings
- oil filter replacement
- removing and installing the oil pan
- removal, inspection and installation of the flywheel
- inspection and replacement of engine/gearbox (powertrain) mounting mounts
