This part of chapter 2 is devoted to the repair operations carried out on the engine installed in the car. Information regarding engine/transmission removal and reinstallation and engine overhaul is provided in Part D of this chapter.

Engine Description

An overhead valve, water-cooled, four-cylinder in-line engine is designated CVH or PTE. The PTE engine was introduced in 1995 and, apart from modifications to the cylinder head, camshaft, and air supply system, is virtually identical to the CVH engine it replaces.

The engine is mounted transversely in front of the vehicle along with the gearbox.

The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings. The lower head of the connecting rod is mounted on the connecting rod bearings, and the upper one is connected to the pistons by piston pins with a fixed fit. Each piston has two compression rings and one oil scraper ring.

The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy in which the camshaft is located based on five bearings. The camshaft is driven by a rubber toothed belt driven by a pulley at the front end of the crankshaft. The toothed belt also drives the water pump, which is mounted below the cylinder head. The valves are actuated via levers and hydraulic tappets. The rotary type oil pump is mounted on the front cover of the crankshaft.
