Place the rear of the car on stands and remove the wheel from the desired side. Place a jack under the lower support cup of the suspension arm spring. Remove the plastic cap under the rear storage shelf, unscrew the nut, remove the washer and the shock absorber buffer. Unscrew the nut securing the suspension arm to the body and remove the bolt. Lower the jack and remove the spring and cushion, marking its position.
Install the spring in the reverse order of removal. Install the cushion and spring on the suspension arm. Raise the arm with a jack, insert the suspension arm mounting bolt to the body. Install the buffer, washer, tighten the nut and install the plastic shock absorber cap. Install the wheel and lower the car. Tighten the nut of the suspension arm mounting bolt to the body and the wheel mounting bolts.
On Escort XR3 vehicles, the plastic spring bushing is installed upwards during assembly.
