Removal


Raise the rear of the vehicle and secure it on stands. Remove the relevant rear wheel and release the handbrake.

On all models except Van, remove the 4 bolts securing the drum/hub to the rear axle flange, then remove the drum/hub from the axle. If the brake drum is held in place by brake shoes, remove the rubber plug from the inside of the brake shield and release the automatic brake adjuster mechanism by lowering the adjuster latch through the brake shield (see Fig. 9.20, 9.21).

On Van models, additionally remove the retainer from one of the wheel bolts.

Examination


Clean the inner surfaces of the brake drum, check the condition of its inner surface for wear and damage. If the condition of the inner surface of the drum is poor, it must be replaced



Installation


Carefully position the drum/hub assembly on the shoes and tighten to the rear axle flange to the specified torque. On Van models, secure the drum with a locking pin. Install the wheel. Press the brake pedal several times to automatically adjust the brake shoes.
