Starting the engine (Escort 4)

Engine starting information applies to all models equipped with injection or carburetor.

Attention! The engine must be started with the handbrake applied. The gearshift lever must be set to neutral, and in the automatic transmission - to the "P" position.

Cars with automatic transmission

Start the engine with the lever in the "P" position.

High idle speeds on a cold engine are not allowed.

The handbrake must be applied or the foot brake pedal must be depressed.

Cars with CVH engine with a working volume of 1.4 dm³

When starting these engines, you can hear a valve knock, which disappears after the engine warms up, since they have hydraulic valve clearance compensators.

These cars are equipped with an additional safety switch. It is used to turn off the electric fuel pump in the event of an accident. To turn it on again, you need to press the button. The switch is located in the spare wheel niche. To bring the fuel system into working condition, you need to press the button and turn the key in the ignition switch to position II for a few seconds, and then return it to the original position.

Starting a cold gasoline engine

An engine is considered cold when its temperature is below 0°C.

When starting the engine, be sure to squeeze the clutch to disengage the gearbox with thickened oil. The clutch can be released after the engine starts to run steadily.

Starting a cold gasoline engine with a manually controlled choke

1. Pull the carburetor choke control handle toward you until it stops. Press the accelerator pedal twice.



2. Turn on the starter by turning the ignition key to position III. Turn on the starter for no more than 10 seconds. If the engine does not start on the first attempt, try starting again no sooner than 30 seconds later. Do not press the accelerator pedal when starting the engine. If the engine does not start after two attempts, then too much fuel has entered the engine, in which case you must follow the instructions below.



3. After starting and gradually warming up the engine, gradually move the carburetor air damper control handle in, while maintaining a stable engine speed.

4. When the engine reaches operating temperature, push the carburetor air damper control handle all the way down. You can start driving.

Starting a cold gasoline engine with automatic choke

1. Before starting the engine, slowly press the accelerator pedal twice. After this, the automatic system is turned on.



2. Turn on the starter by turning the ignition key to position III. Turn on the starter for no more than 10 seconds. If the engine does not start on the first attempt, try starting again no sooner than 30 seconds later. Do not press the accelerator pedal when starting the engine. If the engine does not start after two attempts, then too much fuel has entered the engine, in which case you must follow the instructions below.

3. If the engine does not start, return the ignition key to position II.

4. Repeat step 1, but press the accelerator pedal only once.

5. After starting the engine, press the accelerator pedal slightly to increase the idle speed.



6. Driving can be started after the engine has warmed up completely. When starting a cold or hot engine with a working volume of 1.4 dm³ with a fuel injection system, do not press the accelerator pedal.

Starting a hot gasoline engine

1. Pull the carburetor choke control handle out slightly.



2. Press the accelerator pedal halfway and start the engine.

3. If the engine does not start after three attempts, follow the instructions below.

Starting a gasoline engine with fuel overflow

1. Push the carburetor air damper control handle all the way in.



2. Slowly press the accelerator pedal all the way down and hold it in this position.

3. Start the engine with the starter.

4. If the engine does not start, repeat the steps for starting a hot gasoline engine.

Starting a diesel engine

1. Turn the ignition key to position II and wait until the glow plug indicator light goes out.

2. When the engine is cold, press the clutch and accelerator pedals all the way down and, holding them in this position, start the engine.

3. If the engine does not start within 20 seconds, try starting again after a short period of time (points 1 and 2).
