Air filter — removal and installation (Transit 2)

            0

Note: Many different types of air filters have been fitted to Ford Transit Diesel engines over the life of the engine, these varying according to engine power output, year of manufacture, type of injection equipment fitted, or location. The following procedures are basically the same for all types, but there are some differences on some models.

Engines without turbocharging

1. If the air cleaner is round and mounted on top of the engine, separate the air cleaner inlet hose from the air duct inlet and, where attached, from the vacuum tube to the brake booster vacuum hose tee. Remove the center retaining bolt on the air cleaner cover and the support bracket bolts at the front (see Figure 3.1). Remove the unit from the engine by disconnecting the warm air hose where it is located. If an exhaust gas recirculation system is installed, remove the air cleaner together with the oil cap and breather hose.

2. If the air cleaner is square and mounted on top of the engine, loosen the hose clamp and separate the intake hose from the throttle body. Lift the oil filler cap, then unscrew the three bolts securing the air filter to the engine (see figure 3.2). Lift the unit and remove it from the engine together with the cover.

3. If the air filter is mounted on the side of the engine, separate the power steering reservoir (where it is available) from the air filter and lay it on one side. On some models, the reservoir is held in place with a single bolt. Loosen the hose clamp or remove two screws and separate the cold air hose or inlet hose. Disconnect all vacuum hoses, noting their locations. Unscrew the lower retaining nut, then pull the air filter upward to release it (see figure 3.3a,b).

Installation

4. In all cases, installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

Removal

5. If the air filter is installed on top of the engine, disconnect the plug connector of the intake air temperature sensor (where is it installed) from the air filter and unclip the clamp securing the air hose to the turbocharger Disconnect the cold air hose and unscrew the three bolts securing the air filter (see figure 3.2). Remove the oil cap and remove the air cleaner along with the oil cap and turbocharger inlet hose.

6. If the air filter is mounted on the side of the engine, separate the power steering reservoir (where it is available) from the air filter and lay it on one side. On some models, the tank is attached with one bolt. Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor connector (where is it installed) from the air filter and unclip the clamp securing the air hose to the turbo. Disconnect all vacuum hoses, making note of their locations. Unscrew the lower retaining nut, then pull the air filter upward to release it.
