Front oil seal
Removal
1. Remove the oil pump cover according to paragraphs 1-4 section 13.
2. Mark and record the installation depth of the oil seal in relation to the outer surface of the oil pump cover.
3. Place the casing on wooden blocks and knock out the old seal with a small chisel (see Figure 15.3).

4. Thoroughly clean the housing and remove all traces of old gasket from the mating surfaces. Also clean the mating surface of the engine intermediate plate. Purchase a new oil seal and a new oil pump housing gasket.
Installation
5. Install the new seal into the housing hole with the open side inward (towards the engine).
6. Drive the new seal into place at a right angle, using the old seal as a guide and mandrel. Make sure the new seal is seated to the same depth as noted during removal.
7. The new oil seal should be supplied complete with a plastic sleeve to protect the sealing lip when it engages over the oil pump housing. Save this sleeve for use during installation.
8. Install the oil pump cover in accordance with paragraphs 16-23 section 13.
Rear oil seal
Removal
9. Remove the flywheel as described in section 16.
10. Replacing the rear oil seal can be done in one of two possible ways, depending on the tools available.
11. If Ford tools No. 21-151 and No. 21-102 are available (for models produced before 1989) or No. 21-102-03 (for models produced after 1989), they can be used to remove the old oil seal from the bracket and install a new oil seal. When using these tools, follow the instructions included with the tool.
12. If there are no special tools, remove the pan as described in section 12, then proceed as follows.
13. After unscrewing four bolts, remove the bracket with the old oil seal from the rear surface of the cylinder block (see Figure 15.13).

14. Place the bracket on wooden blocks and knock out the old seal with a small chisel (see Figure 15.14).

15. Thoroughly clean the housing and remove all traces of old gasket from the mating surfaces. Similarly, clean the mating surface of the cylinder block and the surface of the crankshaft on which the sealing lip of the oil seal rests. Take a new oil seal and a new oil seal bracket gasket.
Installation
16. The new oil seal should come complete with a plastic bushing to protect the sealing lip of the oil seal as it engages over the crankshaft. Save this sleeve for use during reinstallation (see figure 15.16).

17. Install the oil seal in its place in the bracket with the open side facing the engine.
18. Using a block of wood, tap the seal into place until it contacts the shoulder of the bracket (see figure 15.18).

19. Lubricate the sealing lips of the oil seal and install the plastic bushing in place from the inside (see figure 15.19).

20. Install the new bracket gasket onto the cylinder block in the required position and return the bracket to its place, discard the plastic bushing that will be pushed out when installing the bracket (see Figure 15.20). Insert the bolts and tighten them by hand.

21. Align the bottom surface of the oil seal bracket with the bottom surface of the cylinder block and tighten the bolts to the specified tightening torque.
22. Install the tray as described in section 12, and the flywheel as described in section 16.
