Loosen the front wheel mounting nuts.
Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands. Remove the wheel.
Unscrew the steering rod ball joint from the steering knuckle.
Remove the bolt and nut securing the lower ball joint of the suspension arm to the steering knuckle. Note the position of the bolt so that it can be reinstalled correctly. Lower the suspension arm. Note the position of the clamps securing the outer joint protective boot. Release the clamps and slide the protective boot along the drive shaft toward the gearbox. Remove any grease from the outer joint. Using suitable pliers, remove the retaining ring from the drive shaft and at the same time pull the hub out of the vehicle (see Fig. 8.14). This will release the drive shaft from the outer joint.
Remove the old protective boot from the drive shaft.
Clean the drive shaft.
Install a new protective boot onto the drive shaft.
Install a new retaining ring into the groove of the outer joint and apply grease to it (see Fig. 8.15, 8.16).
Slide the drive shaft into the outer joint so that the retaining ring is fixed in the groove of the drive shaft (see Fig. 8.17).
Remove excess grease from the joint. Slide the protective boot along the drive shaft and position it on the bearing surfaces of the shaft and joint. Secure the protective boot with clamps.
Attention: After installing the large outer joint clamp, check that the free end of the clamp is pressed tightly against the joint and does not touch the steering knuckle when the shaft rotates.
Connect the lower arm ball joint to the steering knuckle. Insert the clamping bolt into its original position and tighten the lock nut to the specified torque. Connect the steering rod ball joint to the steering knuckle. Install the wheel and lower the vehicle.
