Warning: If suspension or steering fasteners are lost or loosened, they must be replaced with new ones; do not reuse them. Fasteners must be replaced with new ones of the same design, quality and marking.
Removal
1. Loosen the wheel nuts, lift the car, place it on stands. Block the front wheels and remove the rear wheel.
2. Remove the rear brake drum assembly of the hub (see chapter 9).
3. Unscrew the bracket supporting the brake hose from the rack (see figure 11.5).
4. Unscrew the four bolts that secure the brake shield to the knuckle. Remove the brake shield and hang it on a wire. In this case, it is not necessary to disconnect the parking brake cable from the brake shield (see figures).
5. Loosen, but do not remove, the pinch bolt between the knuckle and the strut (see illustration).
6. Unscrew the nuts securing the lever to the knuckle, then remove the levers from the bolts (see figure).
7. Unscrew the rear nut of the reaction rod. Hold the rods with a wrench by the flat surfaces. Remove the washer and rubber cushion (see figure 14.3).
8. Unscrew the previously loosened tie bolt between the shaft and the stand, supporting the shaft so that it does not fall.
9. Move the shaft back enough to gain access to the power strut, then remove it from the strut (see illustration). The control arm bolts can now be replaced.
Installation
10. Check the thrust bearings for cracks and wear. Replace if necessary.
11. Connect the knuckle to the end of the reaction rod, then put it on the strut, aligning the notch in the clamping unit with the ear of the strut. Insert a new clamping bolt between the knuckle and the strut, tighten it by hand
12. Install the outer thrust pad, washer and new nut. Do not tighten the nut.
13. Place the arms on the knuckle bolts. Tighten the nuts by hand.
14. Place a jack under the fist and raise it to a normal height.
15. Tighten the knuckle-to-strut mounting bolt to the required torque.
16. Tighten the large torque rod nut to the specified torque.
17. Tighten the lever nuts to the required torque.
18. Attach the brake shield to the knuckle, tighten the four bolts securely.
19. Screw the brake hose bracket to the strut. Be careful not to damage the hose by bending it when installing it in place.
20. Install the hub brake drum block (chapter 9).
21. Install the wheel and tighten the support nuts.
22. Lower the vehicle and tighten the nuts to the specified torque.
