Removal
1. Remove the front wheel hub from the steering knuckle as described in Section 2.
2. Remove the cotter pin securing the ball joint at the end of the tie rod to the steering arm. Loosen the castle lock nut, then release the ball stud cone with a suitable ball joint puller.
3. Place a jack or supports under the lower suspension arm.
4. Unscrew the four bolts and remove the steering knuckle shock absorber (see figure 4.3).
Figure 4.3. Four bolts (A) securing the shock absorber to the steering knuckle and a nut (B) securing the lower suspension arm ball joint to the steering knuckle.
5. Remove the cotter pin (if installed), then unscrew the nut securing the lower arm ball joint to the steering knuckle. If the ball joint turns when you loosen the nut, push the steering knuckle down hard. This will grip the ball joint cone, preventing it from turning. On later models, insert a 9mm socket wrench into the top of the ball stud to hold the stud in place while you remove the nut.
6. After removing the nut, release the ball pin cone with a suitable ball joint puller or two-pronged puller, taking care not to damage the ball pin protective housing.
7. Separate the steering knuckle from the ball pin and then remove it.
Installation
8. If the lower control arm ball joint is secured with a castle nut and cotter pin, to facilitate installation of a new cotter pin, rotate the ball joint rod so that the hole for the cotter pin forms an angle of 90° with the steering knuckle journal.
9. After ensuring the cones are clean, install the steering knuckle onto the ball joint pin.
10. Once the lock nut is installed, tighten it to the specified torque while holding the ball joint from rotating as described above.
11. If a castle-type lock nut is used, secure the nut with a new cotter pin. If necessary, tighten the nut a little more to align the grooves in the nut with the cotter pin hole in the ball stud.
12. Position the shock absorber against the steering knuckle, then secure it with the four bolts and washers, tightening them to the specified torque. Before applying the shock absorber, make sure the upper brake caliper guide bracket retaining bolt is in its hole. Remove the jack or supports from under the lower control arm.
13. Insert the ball joint into the end of the steering knuckle with the steering knuckle, then screw on the locking nut and tighten it to the specified torque. If necessary, tighten the nut a little more to align the grooves in the nut with the cotter pin hole in the ball joint shaft.
14. Install the front wheel hub as described in Section 2.
