Checking wheel bearing play

            0

The front wheels of the Fiesta are mounted on double-row ball bearings, while the rear axle is fitted with maintenance-free tapered bearings. The bearings in the rear wheel hubs practically do not wear out. If properly installed, they will last more than 150,000 km on the vehicle. The heavily loaded front wheel bearings can withstand much lower mileage and are replaced as a set if damaged. If the bearings are damaged, immediately pay attention to noises and knocks coming from the wheel hubs. A rattle when turning to the right indicates damage to the front left bearing, noises and knocks when turning to the left indicate a damaged right bearing. It is better to replace it in a car repair shop: bearings, rotating rings, hub and steering knuckle are made with high precision, qualified repairs are impossible without special tools.

SEQUENCE OF WORK

1. Park the vehicle on a level paved surface. Grasp the top edge of the wheel and try to move it rhythmically towards the center and out of the car. If there is no play and noise, then the bearings are working.

2. If the front wheel has play, ask the assistant to press the brake pedal and repeat the test. If the wheel play remains, then the ball joint of the lower transverse arm of the front suspension is worn out.
