Shock absorbers usually do not fail suddenly, their performance decreases gradually, to which the car owner gets used to unnoticeably. After replacing two worn-out sets of tires, the performance of the shock absorbers is only 50% of the original.
An accurate diagnosis of the shock absorber's performance cannot be made using the "swing method", in which a certain wing is pressed and released abruptly. This method can only detect a faulty shock absorber.
The technical condition of the shock absorber can only be determined by testing it on a special stand.
There are several signs that can be used to assess the performance of shock absorbers. In a Fiesta, pay attention to the following signs.
1. Steering vibration, which is caused by the wheel bouncing off the road surface or improper balancing.
2. Increasing vibrations of the body when driving on uneven road surfaces.
3. Prolonged rocking of the body when driving on uneven road surfaces.
4. Uneven and unstable movement of the wheels in a certain speed range, including when turning.
5. Increased and uneven wear of tires, characterized by wear of the tire pattern.
6. Significant traces of oil on the outside of the shock absorbers, reaching the lower plates of the shock absorber springs. On the contrary, minor oil leaks are normal.
