Replacing the wheel hub bearing (Fiesta 4)

The ball bearings in the front wheel hubs of the Fiesta are initially installed with a very small tolerance. Subsequent adjustment of the bearing clearance is not required. Due to the high precision of manufacturing and fitting of the mating parts, it is very important to use special tools in this case. Therefore, it is better to entrust the replacement of the front wheel hub bearing to a car repair shop.



SEQUENCE OF WORKS

1. Remove the steering knuckle as described above.

2. Secure the wheel hub in a vice with jaws protected by soft sheet metal.

3. Using a special puller, remove bearing 1 (Fig. 13.19) of the hub from the steering knuckle.



4. Thoroughly wash the steering knuckle in gasoline and dry it with compressed air.

5. To install the bearing, place the steering knuckle on a suitable wooden block. Spray the new bearing with de-icer from an aerosol can (the bearing will shrink from the cold), install it in the steering knuckle and "hammer" it in with a few careful blows of a hammer. Using a suitable pressing tool, press the bearing in until it stops (the pressing tool should pass between the jaws of the vice). The work must be done smoothly and quickly, since the "squeezing" action of the aerosol quickly wears off and the bearing may become warped in the steering knuckle. When pressing in, do not damage the inner race of the bearing.

6. Install the steering knuckle as described above.

7. Lower the vehicle onto its wheels and tighten the wheel hub nut to a torque of 250 Nm.

When carrying out any work, be sure not to damage the ABS sensor rotor, otherwise malfunctions will occur in the ABS system.
