Disconnect the ground wire from the battery clamp.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system. If the coolant has been in use for less than two years and is not contaminated, it can be used again.
Disconnect all flexible hoses from the engine.
Disconnect the throttle cable from the 1.4i engine (with petrol injection), together with its mount and rod. In a diesel engine, disconnect the throttle cable from the high-pressure fuel pump.
Remove the fuel lines and seal their open ends to prevent contamination from entering them.
Remove all electrical wires from the engine.
Disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission.
Disconnect the clutch release cable from the release forks.
Remove the air filter in a diesel engine.
Raise the car using a two-wheel jack (lift).
Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
Remove the lambda probe wire (applies to a car with a 1.4i engine).
Remove the exhaust system by disconnecting its parts from the rubber mounts.
Remove the bolt securing the ground wire to the engine housing.
Disconnect the gear shift rod from the manual transmission (Fig. 2.5).

Unscrew the gear shift lever bracket from the manual transmission.
Disconnect the flywheel housing from the side member (three fasteners).
Disconnect the starter and ground wires from the manual transmission.
Disconnect the lower hinges of the steering knuckles of the columns on both sides of the vehicle (Fig. 2.6).

Disconnect the left side cross member from the steering knuckle arm.
Remove the timing belt cover (this applies to 1.6i engines in vehicles with ABS).
Remove the pressure modulator with the SCS sensor (Fig. 2.7).

Remove the inner timing belt cover.
Remove the left half-shaft from the gearbox. To do this, insert the mounting lever between the half-shaft and the gearbox. Push the half-shaft out as far as possible (Fig. 2.8).

Tie the axle shaft to the chassis. Close the hole in the gearbox.
Remove the right wishbone and torque rod.
Remove the right axle shaft from the gearbox and tie it to the chassis.
On a vehicle with a two-piece right axle shaft, the following additional steps must be performed:
- disconnect the casings (covers) (B. Fig. 2.9) from the casings (covers) for removing the drive from the gearbox.
- unscrew the intermediate bearing bolts from the engine (C. Fig. 2.9).
- pull the complete half shaft out of the manual transmission and hang it on the steering rods.

Support the power unit from below.
Disconnect the beam supporting the gearbox from the body (Fig. 2.10).

Remove the power unit (engine with gearbox) downwards.
