2. Car number, consisting of seven letters (until December 31, 1980):
- 1st letter: country of manufacture: B - Great Britain: C - Ireland; G - Germany; W - Spain.
- 2nd letter: assembly plant: A - Dagenham Cologne; B - Halevud Genk; C - Langley Sarlui. E - Cork; R - Valencia.
- 3rd letter: car model. A - «Escort»
- 4th letter: option: A - five-door hatchback; B - three-door hatchback or coupe; V - cargo-passenger; W - three-door station wagon.
- 5th letter, year of issue.
- 6th letter: month of issue.
- 7th letter: serial number of the car (before 1980).
From January 1, 1981, in accordance with EEC standards, a 17-digit number is stamped on the plate:
- 1. International code of the manufacturer.
- 2. Body type: single character.
- 3. Two permanent letters: two characters.
- 4. Country of manufacture: one character.
- 5. Manufacturer: one character.
- 6. Variant and modification of the body: two characters.
- 7. Year and month of issue: two characters.
- 8. Number of five variable digits: five digits.
3. Gross vehicle weight.
4. Gross transport weight.
5. Gross weight on the front axle.
6. Gross weight on the rear axle.
7. Steering type.
8. Engine model.
9. Transmission: T - mechanical four-speed gearbox.
10. Main gear.

15. Code for partially assembled vehicles for delivery to certain countries.
16. Engine model and number. The model and engine number are stamped on the cylinder block on the left side, above the starter, the model is also stamped on the right side above the clutch housing.
