Removing and installing the camshaft drive chain cover

            0

Note: On 3.8L engines, the oil pump is built into the camshaft timing chain cover.

Withdrawal

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Drain coolant and remove belts (Chapter 1).

3. Remove the right front wheel and take out the inner fender liner (chapter 11).

4. Remove idler pulley and bracket block (chapter 3).

5. Remove the water pump (chapter 3).

Only for 3.8L engines

6. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing.

7. Remove the oil pan (section 14).

8. Remove the distributor (chapter 5).

For all engines

9. Remove the power steering pump bolts (if the car is equipped with it) and set aside without disconnecting the hoses.

10. On machines with air conditioning, unscrew the bolts of the bracket that supports the front compressor, but do not remove the compressor itself.

Warning: The air conditioning system is under high pressure. Do not touch the tips as unexpected ejection may cause serious injury.

11. Remove vibration damper (section 9).

12. Turn off bolts of a cover of a chain of a drive of a cam-shaft.

13. Loosen the cover with a soft-faced hammer and remove it from the engine.

Caution: Do not apply too much force so that the cover does not crack. If the cover does not come off, check all the bolts again. On 3.8L engines, it's easy to forget the Allen head bolt located under the oil filter housing.

14. Thoroughly clean and check all parts, remove gasket residues (see picture) Remove the oil film with solvent.

For 3.8L engines

15. When removing the intermediate shaft from the front cover, first remove the clamp from the shaft, then remove it from the cover.

16. To install the shaft, make a mark at a distance of 1 inch from the brake (see picture). Move the shaft until until it sits on the oil pump, and snap the clip onto the shaft like this. so that its top is directly under the mark made on the shaft (see picture).

17. The oil pump is built into the camshaft drive chain cover. Further information - in section 15.

18. Make sure the thrust button and camshaft spring are correctly positioned on the end of the camshaft (see picture).

Installation

19. Replace the cover by gluing it (Ford D7AZ -19B508 - A or similar) with new gasket. Apply pipe sealant (Ford D6AZ - 19558 - A or similar) on the threaded parts of the bolts.

20. Tighten the bolts to the correct torque.

21. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of disassembly.

22. If necessary, add oil and coolant, start the engine, check for leaks.
