2. Before removing the valve lifters, take measurements to ensure that they are installed accurately in their proper places.
3. The tappets are removed from the channels in the following ways: on new engines the tappets can be removed with a small magnet, a ruler with a curved end, placing a dot under the retainer ring on the top of each tappet.
Caution: Do not use pliers to remove the plungers.
4. After removing the tappets, wash them with solvent and wipe them dry without mixing. Remember that each tappet will need to be installed in the same place from which it was removed.
5. Check each tappet wall, pushrod seat, and tappet leg for abrasion, nicks, and wear. The tappet leg (the surface that follows the contour of the camshaft lobe) should be slightly convex, although this is difficult to discern with the naked eye. If it is concave (see illustration), the camshaft and tappets must be replaced. If the tappet walls are damaged or worn, inspect the bores in the engine block. If the tappet rod seats are worn, inspect the rod ends.
6. When replacing the tappets, the camshaft should be replaced.
7. Before installing into the block, lubricate the foot of each tappet with a moth-based lubricant.
