2. Remove the eight bolts securing the rear seat back hinges (Fig. 16.23).
3. Remove the rear seat back.
4. Install the rear seat back and hand tighten the hinge mounting bolts.
5. Install the backrest, check that it is secured with the clamps and, if necessary, reinstall the seat backrest and hinges.
6. Tighten the hinge mounting bolts to 25 Nm.
PRACTICAL ADVICE
The condition of the seat belts can be critical to the protection of the driver and passengers in the event of an accident. Therefore, it is necessary to periodically check the technical condition of the seat belts. Belts that have been subjected to critical stress in an accident should be replaced.
The 96 Series Fiesta is equipped with automatic seat belts, with a pyrotechnic belt tensioner on the front seats. A lap belt is installed for the middle rear seat passenger. Malfunctions in the SRS safety system are indicated by the airbag warning lamp in the instrument cluster. If the lamp is constantly on, visit a service center: it is prohibited to disassemble or repair the airbag components or automatic belt tensioner on your own. The inertia belts of the 96 Series Fiesta are equipped with two sensors. The vehicle motion sensor is activated during braking, cornering, steep climbs in the mountains and unfavorable vehicle position. The belt sensor blocks the belt webbing when it is pulled out abruptly.
Before checking the seat belts, make sure that they are free of the following defects:
- waviness or curvature;
- fraying of edges;
- cuts or abrasions;
- breaks in fabric threads.
If the belts are free from defects, perform dynamic tests and if the belts fail, replace them immediately.
Brake test
1. Fasten your seat belt correctly.
2. Start the engine, engage 1st gear, accelerate the car to a speed of 10 km/h (never drive at a higher speed).
3. Brake sharply and stop the car. If the car's motion sensor is working properly, the automatic mechanism will lock the belt. This should also be confirmed by the passenger sitting next to the driver.
4. Repeat the test with all automatic belts.
Additional check (movement in a turn)
Perform this check on a spacious area where the vehicle can turn around with the front wheels fully turned.
1. Drive in a circle with the front wheels fully turned and a maximum speed of 16 km/h (never exceed this speed).
2. While driving, the passenger in the car with you should try to slowly pull the belt tape out of the automatic device. If he/she succeeds, replace the seat belts.
Checking the belt sensor
Stop the car on a flat horizontal surface, firmly grasp the belt near the upper anchorage and try to pull the belt out with a jerk. After pulling the belt tape out 25 cm, the belt should lock. If the belt continues to pull out, replace it.
Before you install new belts, carefully check their attachment points.
