PRACTICAL ADVICE

The condition of seat belts can be critical to protecting the driver and passengers in the event of an accident. Therefore, it is necessary to periodically check the technical condition of the seat belts. Belts that have been critically loaded in an accident should be replaced.

The 96-series Fiesta is equipped with automatic seat belts, in the front seats with a pyrotechnic belt tensioner. A lap belt is installed for the middle passenger in the rear seat. Malfunctions in the SRS security system are signaled by the airbag warning lamp in the instrument cluster. If the light stays on, visit the service center: do not disassemble or repair the airbag components or the automatic belt tensioner yourself. The inertial belts of the Fiesta 96 are equipped with two sensors. The vehicle motion sensor is activated during braking, cornering, steep hills and unfavorable vehicle positions. The belt sensor blocks the belt tape when it is pulled out sharply.

Before checking the seat belts, make sure that they are free of the following defects:
  • waviness or curvature;
  • edge fraying;
  • cuts or abrasions;
  • breaks in the threads of the fabric.

If the belts are free from defects, perform a dynamic test and if the belts fail, replace them immediately.

Brake test

1. Fasten your seat belt correctly.

2. Start the engine, engage 1st gear, accelerate the car to a speed of 10 km/h (never move faster).

3. Slowly brake and stop the vehicle. If the vehicle's motion sensor works flawlessly, the automatic mechanism will lock the belt. This must be confirmed by the passenger sitting next to the driver.

4. Repeat the test with all automatic belts.

additional verification (movement in a turn)

Perform this test in a wide area where the vehicle can turn around with the front wheels fully turned.

1. Drive in a circle with the front wheels fully turned and a maximum speed of 16 km/h (never exceed this speed).

2. While driving, the passenger in the car with you should try to slowly pull the seat belt out of the automatic device. If he succeeded, replace the seat belts.

Checking the Belt Sensor

Stop the vehicle on a level surface, grasp the belt firmly near the upper anchorage and try to pull the belt out with a jerk. After the belt has been pulled out 25 cm, the belt should lock. If the belt stretches further, replace it.

Before you install new belts, carefully check their attachment points.
