Tie rod ends — removal and installation (Taurus 1 and 2)

Warning: If suspension or steering fasteners are lost or loosened, they must be replaced with new ones of the same design, quality and marking. Do not reuse them.

Removal

1. Loosen the wheel nuts. Raise the front of the vehicle, support it securely, block the rear wheels and apply the parking brake. Remove the front wheel.

2. Holding the tie rod end with locking pliers, loosen the lock nut enough to mark the position of the rod end in relation to the thread (see illustrations).





3. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the nut on the steering rod joint stud.

4. Disconnect the steering rod from the steering knuckle arm using a puller (see figure). Unscrew the nut and separate the steering rod joint and the steering knuckle.





5. Unscrew the tie rod end from the tie rod.

Installation

6. Tighten the tie rod end to the marked position and insert the tie rod stud into the steering knuckle arm. Tighten the lock nut securely.

7. Screw a new nut onto the stud and tighten it to the required tightening torque. Install a new cotter pin.

8. Install the wheel, tighten the nuts. Lower the car, tighten the nuts to the required tightening torque.

9. Check convergence.
