Warning: If suspension or steering fasteners are lost or loosened, they must be replaced with new ones; do not reuse them. Fasteners must be replaced with new ones of the same design, quality and marking.
1. Loosen the wheel nuts. Raise the front of the vehicle, support it securely, block the rear wheels and apply the parking brake. Remove the wheel.
2. Loosen the lock nut on the end of the steering rod and disconnect the end of the rod from the steering knuckle as described in section 30.
3. Remove the clamps of the steering gear cross member housings, remove the housing from the rod.
4. Before installing the new housing, wrap the threads and serrated surfaces of the tie rod end with a layer of tape to prevent damage to the new housing.
5. Install the new cover into place on the tie rod crossmember so that it fits into the groove in the tie rod, then install the new clamps.
6. Remove the tape and install the tie rod end (section 30).
