This chapter has been compiled to help novice mechanics maintain their Ford Transit Diesel in a state of maximum technical readiness, economy, safety and reliability.
The chapter contains a general maintenance schedule for the vehicle, followed by a detailed description of all the procedures contained in the schedule. This includes visual inspections, adjustments, component replacements and other necessary procedures. To facilitate the location of various components, this chapter includes illustrations of general views of the engine compartment and underbody of the vehicle, as well as detailed accompanying illustrations.
Completing the procedures suggested in the maintenance schedule at the specified time/mileage intervals, as well as step-by-step compliance with all operations included in the procedure, should serve as the basis for the reliable operation of all vehicle systems over a long service life. Please remember that the manual provides a detailed action plan, so performing only individual procedures will not lead to the desired result.
As you service your vehicle, you will find that many procedures can and should be grouped together by their nature or due to the close proximity of two related components.
For example, if the vehicle is raised for chassis lubrication, the exhaust, suspension, and steering systems should also be inspected. When rotating wheels, it makes sense to also inspect the brake system components after removing the wheels, or, say, you borrow a torque wrench for a while. Even if you only need a wrench to tighten one component, it makes sense to also check the tightening torque of all critical fasteners.
