Removal

Driver's airbag

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Warning: Before proceeding, wait at least 15 minutes for the energy in the backup capacitor to dissipate to avoid accidental airbag deployment.

2. If necessary, turn the steering wheel until one of the airbag retaining bolts becomes accessible from the rear of the steering wheel. Remove the bolt, then turn the steering wheel again so that the second bolt is accessible. Unscrew this bolt too.

3. Pull the airbag out of the steering wheel until the multi-pin connector at the rear of the airbag is accessible.

4. Disconnect the multi-pin connector from the rear of the unit and remove the unit from the vehicle.

Warning: Store the airbag in a safe place with the mechanism facing down to prevent accidental deployment.

Warning: Do not attempt to open or repair the airbag or apply any electrical current to it. Do not use an airbag that is visibly damaged or bent.

Passenger airbag

5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

6. Using a screwdriver as a lever and a protective spacer, remove the airbag cover located at the top of the dashboard.

7. Working through the opening, disconnect the two multi-pin connectors from the airbag.

8. Unscrew the retaining nuts and remove the airbag from the front panel (see Figure 28.8).
