Checking the valve timing of 1.4i/1.6i engines (Fiesta 2)

The camshaft operates the valves using levers and hydraulic tappets. There is no need to adjust the valve clearances, as the hydraulic tappets constantly reduce the clearance to zero (Fig. 2.82).



Hydraulic tappets must always be in the mounting position, otherwise the tappet will fail.

The camshaft is functionally connected to the crankshaft by a toothed belt. At any given time, the camshaft must be in a strictly defined position relative to the crankshaft. The basic installation of the shafts is determined by the signs that correspond to the unambiguous position of the piston of the first cylinder at TDC - see Fig. 2.83 and 2.84.





The toothed belt that drives the camshaft must be tensioned accordingly. A tensioner placed on the end wall of the engine serves for this purpose (Fig. 2.85). A dynamometer 21-113 serves for measuring the tension of the toothed belt of the gas distribution drive.
